Green Science
Indigenous cultures across the world progressively adapted forest ecosystems to optimize their productive capacity to sustain local food supplies. In contrast, our mono cultural food systems today have become progressively more dependant on massive inputs of cheap oil. Woodland based food systems, like Orchards Agroforestry systems and Forest Gardens will help us to develop more diversified sustainable low input community food production. These low input polycultures, that draw on the expertise of our new scientific understanding of ecological systems, offer a real opportunity to diversify community food systems and research the potential of a wealth of food plants that are largely overlooked by mainstream agriculture.
