Holmewood is situated on the south side of Cockermouth and also looks towards the Lake District hills. The gardening opportunities are wide ranging and exciting. There is much to consider and plan for.
Holmewood gardening project 2012
We have been offered a wide range of growing space within the grounds of Holmewood.
It already has a fully functioning kitchen garden and we will be working alongside, Bernard, one of the residents to plan and produce vegetables and fruit. There is a greenhouse on site where we can grow seedlings and tomatoes and salad. There is a large patio area, that a number of residents look out onto, and we will be planting up flowers and herbs in pots and wall baskets to produce a colourful garden outlook. We have had an additional request to plant up 3 raised beds in this courtyard so that residents in wheelchairs will to be able to grow various plants and produce of their choice.Another area lends itself to being an open, sunny patch where 4 raised beds can be placed and a range of vegetables and soft fruit can be grown. The final growing area has a woodland setting and will be an area where wild life can be protected and viewed and woodland activities can take place.
It will be a wonderful opportunity for many agencies to work together for the benefit of the residents and the wider community of Cockermouth. We are bringing the youngest and oldest residents together. Spadework are busy organising gardening clubs to facilitate this.
We are very grateful to have this opportunity to showcase how beneficial community gardening can be.
