Quote from Kevin McTiernan, River Clean Up leader

"The River Clean-up started from the simple desire to remove some of the litter that distracted  me from enjoying my walks along the river. I then discovered that a friend, Shelly, was doing the same thing. An idea was born from discussions between myself, Shelly and Rick to organise a clean-up event. I was initially reluctant but, after some encouragement, did just that. Initially we had several low-key events of half-a-dozen people or so, over a few months. Then Cathy suggested we organise an event to coincide with the Cockermouth Summer Festival. Again I was initially reluctant, but did so, and it was a great success. The River Clean-up has turned into an annual event, during the Festival. I don't do it more often because the river stays so much cleaner now than it did, and we get a good interest during the Festival. We start at the Youth Hostel and work our way along the Cocker, then on to the Derwent. As a result of this pattern we have mostly focussed on the Cocker, and this was the River I tended to walk along.

There have been suggestions that we branch-out and do litter clear-ups in other areas of the town, such as the cycle-way. We haven't organised such an event thus far. Should someone wish to lead such an event, I have no doubt it would be successful and would make our town a more beautiful place to live."
