Upcycling, a phrase coined by Cradle to Cradle authors William McDonough and Michael Braungart is the act of re-making the way the we make things by considering their impact and keeping material integrity.

In 2010 Cathy Newbery, one of the founders of Riversmeet, was awarded a Crafts Council Spark Plug Award to research and develop a project around design and reuse “Upcycle”.

The research considers issues of best practice, aesthetics, sustainability, the function of design within the climate change debate and the role of craft techniques and contemporary practice in relation to second-hand and waste materials.
